Insurance Coverage & Costs
Does insurance pay for care received in clinical trials?
As of December 1999, all insurers in New Jersey (including those affiliated with the New Jersey Association of Health Plans) must cover the cost of all phases of cancer clinical trials run by:
- National Institutes of Health (NIH)
- NIH cooperative group or center
- US FDA
- US Department of Defense (DOD)
- US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)
In 2000, Medicare also started to pay for clinical trial care. More information about what Medicare covers is available on the Web site of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid (formerly the Health Care Financing Administration). In addition, some insurance providers may cover other clinical trials. Consult with your healthcare provider to learn more about medical coverage.
